Momma Lou’s Traditional Blackberry Cobbler with Dumplings

A classic family recipe featuring fresh blackberries simmered with butter and sugar, cooked dough dumplings, and a golden pie crust top.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups fresh blackberries rinsed
  • 4 cups water
  • ½ stick butter plus extra pats for the top
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar plus extra for sprinkling
  • Prepared pie dough rolled out into strips and a top sheet

Method

  1. Simmer Berries: Place rinsed blackberries, 4 cups water, ½ stick butter, and ¾ cup sugar into a pot. Bring to a boil, lower heat, and simmer for 20 minutes.
  2. Cook Dumplings: Roll out pie dough and cut into strips. Raise pot heat to a low boil, drop dough strips in, and gently shake the pot to move dumplings. Cook for 15-20 minutes.
  3. Assemble: Pour the berry and dumpling mixture into a casserole dish. Top with a full layer of pie dough.
  4. Top & Bake: Dot the top crust with pats of butter and sprinkle with sugar. Bake at 400°F (200°C) until brown and bubbly.

Notes

Serving Suggestion: Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!
